Director of Strategic Development


Institute for Protein Innovation (IPI), a 503c non-profit housed within the Longwood Medical Area, Boston, Massachusetts, (, is a foundry for the development of protein tools and therapeutics. IPI has extensive expertise in the functional and mechanistic analysis of integral membrane proteins, with particular interest in immune and neural functions. The long-term goal of IPI is to exploit state-of-the-art platforms for high-throughput eukaryotic protein production and antibody discovery for the generation of highly validated monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) to all cell surface proteins in human, mouse and zebrafish. These efforts will provide the biomedical community with an arsenal of open-source renewable tools-compounds, and will drive the rapid discovery of a wide range of new biologics for clinical development.

We are recruiting a Director of Strategic Development (DSD) to refine IPI’s business activities, and to formulate future opportunities, directions and interactions with academic and industrial partners. The director will report to the President and COO. 


  • Develop business strategies, and integrate these efforts into the overall mission of IPI 
  • Drive business development efforts, including strategic partnering, out-licensing and related contracting activities
  • Strategic planning, research and implementation for new company formation
  • Coordinate with IPI philanthropic efforts and outreach
  • Evaluate novel opportunities and scientific directions, including market and financial analyses
  • Coordinate with general and patent counsel to develop contracts
  • Represent IPI at meetings, conferences, and seminars
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for collaborative research with academia and biomedical industrial partners, to ensure that internal and external goals, deliverables, and obligations are met
  • Manage multiple projects and effectively prioritize activities to serve partners, while maintaining overall institute mission
  • Present written and oral reports to the scientific advisory board and board of directors, and the senior management of IPI  


  • Prior BD experience in the field of biologics and antibodies development preferred, with good familiarity of the market outlook
  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 5 years' experience in biotech/pharma business development. MBA, MS, or PhD desired
  • Excellent analytical skills, including familiarity with financial modeling
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex issues
  • Strong project management skills
  • Good prior industry connections and network of contacts
