The Institute for Protein Innovation (IPI) is a nonprofit research organization advancing protein science to accelerate research and improve human health. Located on the Harvard Medical School campus in the Boston Longwood Medical Area, IPI uniquely combines the freedom of academia with the high-throughput scaling of industry to take on transformative projects.  IPI has built a robust platform that produces well-characterized, synthetic antibodies and other protein tools. Job Overview

The Senior Accounting Manager will lead daily operations, including:

  • driving the monthly close
  • preparing and reviewing appropriate ledger entries and reconciliations
  • booking revenue
  • maintaining the general ledger system
  • preparing monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements
  • assisting with regulatory reporting, as applicable

The role requires the ability to monitor the organization’s accounting and finance operations closely. The ideal candidate will work closely with team members to ensure a united effort and effective outcome. IPI has a fast-paced, intellectually driven, collaborative research culture. Responsibilities and Duties

  • Manages monthly close promptly
  • Responsible for journal entry preparation, account reconciliation and financial statement production and distribution
  • Tracks and monitors funding
  • Ensures accurate reporting to funders
  • Works with the director on organizational, budget-to-actual forecasting
  • Works with program staff to determine the best presentation of financial information for proposals
  • Cognizant of the best strategies to obtain grants while coordinating with internal financial records and understanding the effect on the organization’s budget
  • Partners with the Finance Team to meet needs, including grant reporting or tracking, payroll tracking, reporting needs, new payroll regulations and annuity requirements
  • Provides resources and training, as needed, to other team members, while serving as a backup for designated functions
  • Assists in preparing the NICRA application annually
  • Manages the organization’s daily financial operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets and general ledger maintenance
  • Ensures GAAP and Uniform Guidance compliance over all financial transactions and reporting
  • Takes responsibility for the month-end closing process, including journal entry and reconciliation preparation and review
  • Assists with the development of policies and processes to ensure appropriate internal financial and operational controls
  • Assists in all aspects of the external audit and associated reporting, including preparation of the year-end financial statements
  • Assists in the preparation of the Institute’s tax returns (Form 990 and MA PC) in coordination with the organization’s external auditors and all other tax/compliance-related reporting returns
  • Develops and prepare financial reporting, including ad hoc requests to meet various stakeholder needs

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive finance/accounting experience, including five years in a management role, preferably in a sponsored research/nonprofit setting
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, recent FASB pronouncements and Uniform Guidance
  • Understanding of nonprofit revenue recognition/book revenue
  • Able to identify incoming money that is restricted/unrestricted
  • Experience with Netsuite ERP, Microsoft Excel
  • Confident, team and detail-oriented, deadline-driven, excited about system changes
